Local Heroes: Rounding Up Our Favourite Greenwich Shops

Posted on

It’s been a tough year for small businesses. Here at Meet Bernard, we feel very lucky to be part of such a supportive community of shops and shoppers in the Greenwich and East Dulwich areas, and because we believe in the power of supporting independent stores, we want to shout out those who make this such a special place to call home. Forget the tourist traps, and without further ado, meet our favourites haunts on Greenwich’s streets…

Ben Oakley Gallery | benoakleygallery.com | @benoakleygallery

Situated just off Greenwich Market, this intimate and distinctive independent gallery is home to a diverse and ever-changing array of work from a variety of homegrown artists. Curated thoughtfully by artist & entrepreneur Ben Oakley, the gallery consistently displays evocative, modern pieces. We can vouch for this personally: our East Dulwich store is currently hosting a concession full of their picks, and they’re making the place look just lovely. A must-see for any local art enthusiasts, or for those on the lookout for something inspiring to keep forever.

Tailor & Forge | tailorandforge.com |  @tailorandforge

We believe in the power of curation, and the good folk at Tailor and Forge have that down to a fine art – they handpick stunning, unique homeware and gifts, all of which occupy the shelves of their beautifully-designed boutique down Durnford Street. Pieces are chosen for distinctive style (with an emphasis on ethical,  eco-friendly shopping), and with a stellar variety of everything from face masks made in Denmark to a dining chair in every shade of velvet imaginable, you’re more than likely to walk away with your arms full of special stuff.

Jen Rowland | jenrowland.co.uk | @jen.rowland

Speaking of design, we’d be silly not to shoutout Jen Rowland and her beautiful work, which finds a home just across the road from us at number 5! Jen and her small team (not to mention Darcey the dog) design and create wonderfully intricate stationery and homeware by layering vintage illustrations with her own abstract, detail-focused botanical drawings. Lampshades, pillows, cards, prints, and more, all made with an eye for quality and designed with your home and life in mind. We’d certainly recommend living with them.

Pickwick Papers & Fabrics | pickwickpapers.co.uk | @pickwickpapersfabrics

You could spend hours wandering around Pickwick Papers & Fabrics (situated nicely right next door to Jen Rowland, for those who fancy taking an MB-recommended tour of Greenwich). A haven for all things interior design, Pickwick is full to the brim with intricate and unique wallpapers and fabrics – luxurious, bespoke, and guaranteed to blow the selection of your local big furniture chain out of the water. They’ve occupied their spot since 1975, but you’d be foolish to think of them as old-fashioned: pop in and emerge later with plenty of ideas for how to re-do your living room.

Casbah Records | casbahrecords.co.uk | @casbahrecordsatthebeehive

If you know anything about us, you know that we love music – so where better to shoutout than one of Greenwich’s longest-standing musical institutions? Casbah Records started life as a stall in Greenwich Market, where it sold vinyl to the good people of South East London for 20 years, all before moving to the cosy confines of its home on Creek Road in '09. Now, it’s the only place to go for the music aficionado, proudly stocking a wide array of new and vintage records, alongside DVDs, books, comics and t-shirts. There’s nothing we’d rather do on a rainy afternoon than pour through their collection, or have a chat with their thoroughly nice and uber-knowledgeable staff about what they’d recommend.

The Fudge Patch | thefudgepatch.co.uk | @thefudgepatch

Last but certainly not least, an exceptionally sweet treat for all who visit. In the heart of the Market lies The Fudge Patch, home to freshly-made, almost ridiculously delicious fudge in plenty of flavours to suit whatever you’re in the mood for. They’re also proudly vegan, with an equally tasty array sans cows’ milk, so nobody needs to go without. Pop in and watch them make it (rather impressively) in-store, take one of their very generous samples, and indulge in a great Greenwich indulgence. Take it from this review on their website: “All your wildest dreams will come true after a visit to The Fudge Patch (if your dreams are fudge or coffee-based)”.

Drop into any of these spots – and then ours! – for a slice of the best that South East London has to offer. Tell them Bernard sent you.
