BOAT FLOATERS - JULY 2019

Posted on

July is here, and the temperature – on and off the dance floor – is hotting up.

Even though I’m on the road in Eastern Europe with my family, I’ve managed to find time to serve up a 21-track Boat Floaters playlist for July that will warm your mood.

There is plenty of new goodness, including from two of my all-time favourite artists: Bonobo and Quantic. Sampa the Great’s Final Form is a song I’m sure you’ll be hearing a lot more of this summer. What a banger. Turn up the bass!

I love the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band’s latest venture into hip hop. Can you guess the tune, before it drops, eight bars in, I wonder? There is more newness from Brazil producer VHOOR, whose Deselegante is dark and dirty, and Manasseh’s dub version of Soothsayers’ Goodnight Rico is one to kick back to.

As per usual with Boat Floaters playlists, African beats are never far away. Johannesburg, on Africa Express’ brilliant new album – which features Damon Albarn – is beautiful and modern, while Free Youth’s We Can Move, is an oldie but a goodie, as is Godfrey Odili’s Let’s Do More Music (both reissued by the always-brilliant Soundway). Dole & Kom’s minimalist take on Franco’s Likambo Ya Ngana is fun (but the original is well worth seeking out).

Other oldies but goodies on July’s Boat Floaters include Paul Nice’s Fists of the White Lotus. The selection ends with a classic from one of my top-10 artists: Brazilian wonder Arthur Verocai. His 1972 tune Dedicada A Ela is, for me, a timeless classic.

Before you reach that point, there is plenty more to tuck in to – from Australia, Manchester, Tel Aviv, America, and elsewhere.

Enjoy the sunshine, party people.

Yours in music, Ollie (Boat Floaters)
